ISSUE 102 – LE CORBUSIER: VOYAGE D' ORIENT 1911-2011
Overview
In 1911, the young graduate of the School of Decorative Arts in the Swiss town of La Chaux-de-Fonds Charles-Édouard Jeanneret travelled in the Balkans. In 1925, transformed into Le Corbusier and now an architect, largely self-taught, he wrote about this journey in his book 'L' Art décoratif d' aujourd'hui' this famous passage: 'I started out on a great journey in the countryside and in the cities of renowned countries, which were still untouched. This journey was to prove decisive. [ ... ] Architecture was revealed to me. Architecture is the enchanting game of forms in the light. Architecture is a coherent system of the spirit.' ('J'entrepris un grand voyage qui allait être décisif, à travers les campagnes et les villes des pays réputés encore intacts. [ ... ] L'architecture me fut révélée. L'architecture est le jeu magnifique des formes sous la lumière. L'architecture est un système cohérent de l'esprit.')
