Overview

Tourism has its origin in curiosity, snobbishness or illness. Based on individualism, it developed largely due to a necessity for expansion of western societies. Only these could generate the surplus which is essential for leisure and the development of communications and voluntary movement. It only became a regular part of life when businessmen started to charge for offering a service and employees were granted paid holidays. That is why when during the 1970s the study of tourism emerged as a distinct scholarly subject, it was understandably recognized as a modern phenomenon.
