GREEK ARCHITECTURE AWARDS 2017
Overview
'GREEK ARCHITECTURE AWARDS 2017' attracted a total of 154 entries and 19 entries were shortlisted. Within the group of these top-ranking designs there are 11 built works, three first (executed) buildings by young architects, and five projects. The selection of the 19 works includes, at first sight, an approximately equal number of residences, commercial premises, and communal facilities. However, this initial grouping is disrupted if we take into account the fact that at least three of the seven works of a residential character are intended for exploitation in the tourist industry, another three are holiday homes, and only one, the startling ‘Pagona’s Home’, is a permanent residence. This observation confirms data from the immediately preceding programmes which showed that a large part of the best contemporary architecture - more than half of the award-winning works - are consciously commissioned not simply as a functional, but also as a quality parameter of economic activities which are being developed in the adverse context of the prolonged crisis.
