GREEK ARCHITECTURE AWARDS 2016
Overview
‘GREEK ARCHITECTURE AWARDS 2016’ gathered a total of 152 entries. Twenty two works were shortlisted and are presented in this issue. Within the group of these top-ranking designs there are thirteen built works, four first (executed) buildings by young architects, and five projects. There is a total of six works of a residential character only, an unprecedented low in all years. Even in comparison to the eight residential projects of 2015. Next to the successful vacation or permanent homes, an increased number of beautifully designed commercial projects in urban and non-urban contexts appear and demonstrate the direction of private and other commissions in the time of the protracted economic crisis. Τhere is a considerable increase in the number of works and projects of institutional character. On the other hand, there is a marked decrease in the size of selected executed works. The decree of 2011 that re-established architectural competitions as the only procedure for public commission has not led to any important realisations yet. Still, it has provided the incentive and framework for the product on of a few of the works distinguished by recent years’ jurors.
